Erin Szturm’s practice is research-based, driven by a heightened feel of placelessness and search for a sense of self. The artist embraces the spiral where contemporary feminist and socioenvironmental issues converge. A hunger for interdisciplinarity emerges. As a settler assessing the meaning of living between the City of Ottawa, residing on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory, and their community of Rosslyn, itself on the traditional territory of the Fort William First Nation, Erin shifted their definition of ownership. No matter where they remained, they remained unsettled. As local sites brought back memories, Erin took the time to excavate natural crevices, diverse ecological texts, and critiques for the anthropocene. There is too much to tell. 

They will settle with unsettling you. 

In her debut commercial solo exhibition, pigment and walnut oil on unprepared wood motion to the concurrent, complex ongoing issues caused by the varied interpretations and misevaluations of morality, responsibility, and respect. Land is thrust upon the viewer and just as quickly taken. Raw palms obstruct the plane of view. Spirited creatures and spiritless objects fragment. Everything is fighting for attention and, despite the best intentions, not enough is being done between the framing. 

Erin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a specialization in painting and drawing from the University of Ottawa. She considers herself a fine artist, researcher, and educator. Stay in touch by following on socials or through viewing her website.
